Letter from
the Director

Rebecca Laumann

Dear friends,

Partnerships may be easy to start, but nurturing strong and lasting linkages requires hard work and determination. The staff at the Center for International Education Services are rightly proud of the partnerships we have built with institutions around the world. This past year we have celebrated the anniversaries of several of these partnerships. One of the celebrations highlighted in this issue is the 25th anniversary of the partnership between the University of Memphis and Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz in Germany. Two International Education champions who have been instrumental in this partnership, Dr. Tom Nenon and Dr. Monika Nenon, are featured in this issue.

Dr. Tom Nenon and Dr. Monika Nenon.

I met the Nenons shortly after I joined the UofM as a Study Abroad Director in 2000. They have been tireless advocates and supporters of international education on our campus, and I am proud to call them friends. This issue is dedicated to the Nenons in recognition of their support for education abroad.

Students gathered outside

Also included in this magazine are stories about our students’ experiences abroad and on campus, among which include sketches from Professor Chisamore's architecture class in Scotland which are breathtaking. These pieces make clear that our Memphis Tigers are brave, adventurous and accomplished.

This issue marks our transition to a digital magazine and we hope you enjoy our new format. If so, please consider supporting our programs with a donation to our foundation account. Your support makes it possible for Memphis students to experience the world!

In gratitude,

Rebecca Laumann
